Sri Lanka Electricity Tariff Increase 2026
The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka has officially announced a revision to electricity tariffs for the second quarter of 2026. The new pricing structure introduces moderate to significant increases depending on monthly electricity consumption levels.
New Electricity Tariffs by Usage Category
According to the latest update, households consuming up to 30 electricity units per month will experience a 4.3% increase, which is approximately Rs. 15 more on their monthly bill.
For users consuming between 31 and 60 units, the tariff has increased by 6.9%, adding roughly Rs. 45 to their expenses.
Similarly, consumers in the 61 to 90 unit range will also face a 6.9% hike, with an estimated increase of around Rs. 120.
Households using 91 to 180 units per month will see a slightly higher increase of 7.2%, which translates to approximately Rs. 420 extra.
Highest Increase for Heavy Users
The most significant adjustment affects consumers who use more than 180 units per month. This category will face a sharp 25% increase in electricity tariffs, making it the highest revision among all groups.
Why the Tariff Increase?
The PUCSL stated that the revised electricity rates are being implemented for the second quarter of 2026. The decision was made after reviewing current operational costs and financial requirements within the power sector.
What This Means for Consumers
This tariff revision means that higher electricity users will bear a greater cost burden, while low-usage households will see only minimal increases. Consumers are advised to monitor their electricity usage closely to manage rising expenses.
