Sri Lanka’s electricity bills will increase for high-usage consumers after the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) approved a new electricity tariff revision effective from May 11, 2026.

According to the latest announcement, domestic users consuming less than 180 electricity units per month will not face any increase. The Government has also provided a Rs. 15 billion subsidy to protect low-income and average electricity consumers.

PUCSL stated that nearly 95% of electricity users in Sri Lanka will remain unaffected by the new electricity tariff hike.

Electricity Bill Increase for High Consumption Users

Under the revised electricity tariff structure, households consuming more than 180 units monthly will experience an 18% increase in their electricity bills.

Here are the updated sample electricity bill calculations released by PUCSL:

  • 210 units: Rs. 9,570 → Rs. 11,330
  • 240 units: Rs. 12,120 → Rs. 14,330
  • 270 units: Rs. 14,670 → Rs. 17,330
  • 300 units: Rs. 17,220 → Rs. 20,330

This means consumers currently paying around Rs. 14,000 may now receive electricity bills close to Rs. 17,000 per month.

Sectors Affected by the New Electricity Tariff

The revised electricity tariff increase will apply to:

  • Domestic users consuming above 180 units
  • Religious places exceeding 180 units
  • Public utility categories 2 and 3
  • Government institution categories 1, 2, and 3
  • Hotel sector categories 2 and 3
  • Industrial sector categories 2 and 3

Who Will Not Be Affected?

PUCSL confirmed that there will be no electricity bill increase for:

  • Domestic consumers using below 180 units
  • Religious places below 180 units
  • Small and medium-scale businesses under the first category of industrial, hotel, and public utility sectors

Additional PUCSL Announcements

Alongside the electricity tariff revision, PUCSL also announced several new regulatory measures, including:

  • Legal action against fuel procurement violations
  • Public hearings on fuel pricing transparency
  • Transparent fuel pricing systems for private power plants
  • Mandatory Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and Power Supply Agreements (PSAs) before September 9, 2026

The Commission further instructed the National System Operator (NSO) to update Sri Lanka’s power generation plan by the end of 2026. The goal is to reduce oil dependency by 2030 while increasing renewable energy generation.

PUCSL also assured that additional costs related to coal issues will not be passed on to electricity consumers through future tariff increases.
